Bathroom Tips

© Peggy Hoehne

I am planning to do some bathroom remodeling, so I have been looking at a lot of bathroom information lately. I'll share some of it with you this month.

If you can't afford to remodel right now, or don't feel the room needs a complete remodel, just something to make it feel more up to date, here are some less expensive ideas to use:

• Always the simplest and usually the cheapest way to update any bathroom is with new towels, rug, and shower curtain. Even if you don't want to change the whole color scheme you can create a new look by changing the color of the softwares - towels, rug, curtains and shower curtain.

• The next best idea is to paint the room. Give the room a fresh new look with an up-to-date color scheme. You don't have to match the tiles; you can always go for a complimentary color. For example, if you have blue tiles, paint the walls yellow. If the complimentary color seems too intense, remember you can always use a toned down version. For example, if the tiles are green, you may not want to paint the walls red, but you might like a terracotta or a rose shade.

• Large frameless mirrors were very popular for quite a while in bathrooms. If you have one, but are growing tired of the look, try framing the mirror. Go to the lumber yard or home improvement store and find a molding you like. Cut it to fit around the mirror and put it together. Paint it to match, contrast, or add a new dimension. Experiment with brushing gold or silver highlights on the molding or give it an antique look. Use liquid glue to attach it to the mirror.

• Change the accessories to create a new look. Change the style and/or color of the soap dispenser, wastebasket, and tissue holder. Find a vase or bowl you like and add fresh flowers. Use a basket or bowl for small toiletries. Pretty colored soaps and candles can give a new look and feel to the same old bathroom.

Maybe you don't even need to redo your bathroom, but just fix some problem areas. Some problems and solutions follow:

Mildew - Mildew is often caused by lack of ventilation. If you have a bathroom vent, make sure it is working properly and turn it on after showers and baths to quickly dissipate the large amount of moisture. If there isn't a vent, add one. Adding a vent will cost a bit, but if you don't you are eventually going to have more expensive problems with mildew and rot.
