Some people might not like this gift idea, but many will think it thoughtful and even funny. Try finding a basket or some similarly lightweight container, and fill it with things everyone needs when they are in a bad situation. A flashlight, small clock radio with needed batteries (make sure to pack them separate-the post office asks for this), candles with safe holders to put them in, canned meats, a small can opener, canned veggies or fruits that actually taste good, instant coffee/tea/sweeteners/creamers all in containers that can get wet or knocked around and not break open, disposable/reusable utensils/dishes/glasses, small packages of soap/deodorant and a small first aid kit could all go in there. You might even have a nice big box this can all fit into easily, and plenty of actual packing material or old plastic bags you can pack around it to keep it safe in transit. Be sure to seal it so that everything will arrive still in the basket--a big dry cleaning bag tied around the top with some rubber bands, then a nice ribbon can complete the package. You might even have a lot of these things just lying unused in a corner of your place, so why not hand them out to others that might find them helpful? If nothing else, it is a fun way to not show up empty-handed to a holiday party where you should go and do a little networking.

Avoid crowded shopping malls and long shopping trips with young children. If you must take young ones along, find a quieter time--the middle of the day in the middle of the week. Make the trip short and pay attention to the mood of the young one. As soon as s/he starts to fuss or seems tired (dragging feet, not excited about all the toys displayed etc.) it's time to go home.
