Finding FallIf you are using produce in your decorating, be sure to use a plate, foil, or plastic under the arrangement to protect the surface from moisture. Pumpkins, gourds, and apples can become soft indoors and you don't want your table ruined. The Outdoors Grapevine or straw wreaths are suitable inside or out this time of year. They can be accessorized with scarecrows, pumpkins, grapes, lights, autumn leaves or anything that seems appropriate to you. Create an arrangement of cornstalks and pumpkins near your front door to greet visitors. Pots of blooming chrysanthemums on the door step or in the entry way make a lovely welcome to all who enter. Create pots of autumn plants and grasses for your deck or patio. A grouping of pots can be more interesting than a single pot. Some decorative grasses or plants should grow high and spiky. Add a mid-level plant that will grow round and full and finally something that grows low, trailing and cascading, to make a pleasing arrangement. You can combine blooming plants with essentially foliage plants. Create autumn and winter interest with chrysanthemums and foliage plants, such as ornamental cabbages and kale. Angle chairs away from the wall so a grouping seems to turn in on itself. Tuck a comfortable chair into a corner for a cozy nook for reading or needlework. Add luxurious feeling throws and pillows. Bring out a favorite quilt to use as a throw on a chair of sofa. You may want to re-slip-cover the pieces with a warmer, darker color for fall and winter. Piles of large floor pillows, especially in front of a fire, are fun. Kitchen and Dining Room Use a quilt as a table covering. Try using darker, warmer, or earthtone colors on chair pads, table runners and placemats. Unbleached cotton or natural colored burlaps give a homey feeling. Reds and oranges brighten up the kitchen when used in towels and potholders or use colorful autumn prints or plaids on the table and in the kitchen. Use serving bowls or pitchers for fall arrangements. Use more brass, copper or gold in your accents and accessories. Baskets, straw, and raffia have a seasonal feel.
