Extra socks.
Microwave, if there is room and it is allowed.
Foam mattress topper.
Floor size pillows.
Aerobed for guests.
Vacuum:
A small Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner or electric broom.
Coffee maker.
A bowl, plate and utensils.
Paring knife and a small, acrylic cutting board; a church-key; 1 can opener
Lamps:Simulated natural daylight lamps. Desk lamp.
Floor rug.
Consider a printer/scanner combo. It is a little bit more expensive than a printer, but does not take much more space.
Magnetic strip bulletin board
White board/cork board
Room neutralizer spray
Small trash can and trash bags.

Packing and/or storage:
Some students have found a trunk useful both for moving and for storage, it depends a great deal on how much space you have.
Rubbermaid underbed storage containers.
Milk crates: cheap, lightweight, stackable, fit together in the car, easy to carry, don't have to be unpacked right away, can be used for storage. Use them year after year. Pack socks, underwear and t-shirts in stackable drawers that fit in the closet under the shirts that are hung.
Pack sheets, towels, and some bulkier clothing items in the long plastic bins that slide right under the bed

Advice from experienced parents:
Don't buy sheets from groups sending out flyers.
Some things are cheaper to buy locally than to ship across the country, sell them at the end of the year or four years.
Bring only what you have to have, buy the rest there.
If you are driving your student, on moving in day bring - tools, tape, cords. Try to locate the nearest Staples type store, Bed & Bath, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. for those last minute needs.
If you forgot something, order it Online and have it delivered directly to them at school. (Find out best way to ship to school.)
