What does your college student need?

© Peggy Hoehne

Your child is going off to college, do you know what he or she really needs to take? This one time the phrase "less is more" is quite likely true.

Most dorm rooms have very little room. The less the student brings the more room there will be for the things they really do need. There are lists to help you decide. There is advice from those who have been there and done that. And there is the individual information you can get only from the school you will be going to.

First, find out what your school is going to supply. Some are now providing every student with a laptop or personal computer. If yours does, you don't need to bring your own.

Try to get a picture of the dorm room. Will you need curtains or does it come with blinds? Is there room for a mini refrigerator? Do you need coins for laundry or does your school use a laundry card? Is there a wastebasket? Some rooms come with an iron, does yours? Is there a desk lamp? Is phone service provided?

Compare lists with roommates so you aren't duplicating each other. You may be able to split the big price items such as refrigerator and microwave, TV and DVD player, etc.

What you must have:
Personal toiletry items: Shampoo, conditioner, razors, shaving cream, toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant. Personal grooming items and cosmetics.
Medications: Prescription medications and over-the-counter cold, flu, and headache medications. Glasses and extra contact lenses.
Linens: Extra-long twin sheets are usually standard for dorm rooms. Two sets of sheets and pillowcases (though they may never use the second one). Pillows. Blankets. Two towels and washcloths.
Study aids: Pencils, pens, calculator (and type will depend on your major), notebooks, calendar, binders, back pack, scissors.
Shower items: Robe, shower shoes, shower caddy.

You will probably need or want:
Computer accessories: Ink for your printer, paper, floppy disks, power surge protectors, a desk pad and a mouse pad, computer cables, security lock for laptop.
Small appliances: Alarm clock, radio, TV, VCR, DVD, stereo, fan, desk lamp, wireless phone or cell phone.
Clothing: Depending on the schools location you will probably need both summer and winter clothing the first semester.
Laundry basket: Some prefer the ergonomic laundry basket. Buy a good sturdy one.
Laundry hamper: Collapsible laundry bag
First aid kit.
Plasti-tak or other removable, adhesive poster tabs.
Hangers (multi-skirt/pants hangers save space), S hooks (used in the closet for hanging purses, bags, belts, & scarves)
