I’m Cleaning Out My Closets

Anything that is clean and in good condition, but you do not wear regularly, goes in the Toss pile.

The Toss pile can break down into several more groups.

  • Some may actually get thrown away or turned into cleaning rags.
  • Good, serviceable garments can go to charities or homeless shelters. Get a receipt, the donation is tax deductible.
  • Some of the top quality or specialty items you may want to take to a consignment shop or garage sale.
  • If you just can't quite decide, put them away for six months. If you still haven't used them in that time, get rid of them.
  • If they have sentimental value, decide how valuable they are to you.

If Grandmas wedding dress is staying make sure it is stored in an appropriate box to keep it in good condition and take up the least amount of room possible.
Would that antique dress be more suited to being displayed, either on a dress form or behind glass in a framed display?
Would all of those special baby outfits be more memorable and useful made into a quilt instead of stored away in a box in the back of your closet?
Find ways to use or display your sentimental keepers. You will enjoy them more and they will take less room.

Keep
If you wear it regularly it will go back into your newly clean and organized closet.
If you do not use it regularly, relocate it.
Out of season clothing - If you do not have another closet in the house you can use, store out of season things in sealed plastic bins under the bed.
Formal or theme clothing - Storage bags work well for costumes. Use good quality canvas hanging bags for expensive formal wear.
Yard, gardening, or paint clothes - Use a plastic bin or bottom dresser drawer for these items.
Gym and athletic clothing - See above. (Don't forget to label the plastic storage containers so you know exactly what is in each.
Many things work better stored in drawers, rather than in the closet -

  • Intimate apparel
  • Sweatshirts and T-shirts
  • Tank Tops
  • Swimwear

Clothes you do not use often can go to: Another Closet, Dresser Drawer, Stacking Storage Bins.

Keeping the Closet Organized

  • Sort on a seasonal basis. Try on everything. Have a friend critique whether to Keep or Toss.
  • Spend a half-hour each week straightening up.
  • Get an outfit "ready to wear" for the next day. Hang all the pieces of your "next" outfit, including accessories and shoes, in a special place
