The article Why European Designs Could Invade Your Yard by Petra Schwab, mentions several lawn chairs from international design groups. Each has its own designer name; the Pororoga, Nylon, Anemone, and the Dia chair are some of the new high tech 'synthetics.' New techniques for processing synthetic materials allow designers to fashion innovative and stylish pieces that, while pricey to some of us, are much more affordable than some indoor mimicking pieces being touted by American designers. The top end of the price range for a sofa from one of the star designers, for instance, is around $300. Experts suggest to get started, build the space first. Whether you will be basing your outdoor entertaining on a deck, patio, or surfaced area enclosed by trees, start by creating the foundation. You can gradually add items to create the outdoor kitchen, living room, or eating area you desire. Decide on your goals. They might be expanded living space, added value, or framing a view. How will you use the space? Do you want a summer kitchen, a family gathering spot, an entertaining area, or a place for relaxing? How do you want the space to make you feel? Decide what mood you want this space to evoke. It might be restful, informal or active. How will this outdoor space affect existing indoor and outdoor areas? Consider existing architecture, proportion and scale. Keep in mind the circulation to and from indoor living areas. Visit home improvement warehouses, specialty shops, and outdoor room product manufacturers before deciding on exactly what you want. Outdoor furniture is improving every year and you may find some trends you like that weren't around the last time you looked. Look for products that will compliment your home and style. An outdoor kitchen will revolve around a grill. You don't need the most expensive, but do get a good one. Take a tip from the fancy outdoor kitchens and plan adequate working space. You'll want your outdoor kitchen convenient to the indoor kitchen, but out of traffic patterns. If possible keep it downwind of your dining area. An outdoor dining room needs a shady spot. Summer sun is usually too warm to enjoy while eating. You will want some sunny areas, but keep them separate from the dining area. Whether you are creating an outdoor living room, dining room, or kitchen; look for comfy furniture that can hold up to the weather where you live. Just because someone in Los Angeles is doing it, doesn't mean someone in the northeast can do the same thing.
