House Music and Radio in the 21st. Century

Well it's a new century and it's time to get back in to the music. I must apologize for my absence, but I'm back again and will continue to update you on a weekly basis.

House Music. Where is it headed? As many of you know there were so many new releases that hit the charts in 1999. Some of my best were: Dan Q's "Aura Tribe" *69 Records; "Knights of the Jaquar" - UR; "Bigger Love" - Subliminal; "Chile Sauce" - Powder Production - Glasgow; "Circle" - Mustava - Go Beat; "Dance Naked", Aaron Carl - SFP Records, "Tears" - Frankie Knuckles - Essential Records, "Garden of Love" Sunburst Band - Dave Lee for Z Productions. Sunkids feat. Chance "Rescue Me" Yellorange Records, "Music Is My Life", White Label and of couse "True House" - Marcel - Deept Touch, just to mention a few.

As I have said many times before that House Music is and has always taken the harder edge of the curve. Today if you turn on your radio, you'll probably find more R&B and Hip-Hop and not underground house music. Most if not all of the radio stations are geared toward contemporary music because advertisers who pay the bills don't think house music will help sell their product. However, if they take a closer look, this isn't so. Artists like Chaka Khan and Deborah Cox. Where do you think they came from? Underground house d.j.'s. If you go to clubs like The Warehouse, Body & Soul, Excalibur, Crash, Shelter, and Vinyl you'll be able to find these artists and many, many more. I think if we all pull together and make a statement, maybe the stations and record labels will pull together give these underground artists a chance.

Take a look at "Big Love" on Subliminal Records. This record is so big in clubs throughout the world, but you won't hear it on regular rotation on the radio stations. Why? It's not supposed to be appealing to the general listen audience.

Although there are record pools that distribute the music to the d.j.'s, they still aren't strong enough to open the eyes of radio. The only time that you do hear some good house music, will be around the 12 until 4am slots on weekends.

Next week I'll be talking about some of the underground d.j.'s. For further information on house music, visit http://users.erols.com/djrene.
