Lauryn Hill Proves Hip-Hop is a Grammy History Maker

Lauryn Hill, what an artist. She has broken the record for highest first-week album sales by a female last year. On Wednesday (February 24, 1999) night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles she also broke the record for the most Grammy Awards wins by a female in one night. Her Album of the Year marks the first time a hip-hop artist has won in that category. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which sold 3 million units and debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard's 200 in September 1998, broke the previous wins in one night by a female artist. Hill, who was in 10 nominations spots, won for Best R&B Album, Best New Artist, Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for "Doo Wop (That Thing)." It must be noted that hip-hop music which people thought was only a fad, has been proving everyone wrong. It came, stayed and will be here for a long, long time.
