Hello to all of our friends in our Suite 101 and "Chile News & News' community. Hope you are all set for a wonderful an spicy summer. One of the great botanical ironies this time of the year is how the different families of Chiles start out growing. The mighty Habanero/Chinense family start out the slowest germinators, the initially slowest seedlings and then BOOM! All H--- breaks loose and they become 6' tall monsters. The other families of Hot Peppers which grow much smaller start out as the quickest germinators and the fastest, most vigorous seedlings. Take the 'Thai Sun' as an example. It germinates fast..sometimes in a week. It's an agressive, quick growing seedling..then what happens? It grows to 12" and peaks out. It is a lush 12" growth, with tiny thin leaves and has hundreds of Thai Chiles on it but it is still a tiny, bushy plant. Kinda reminds me of the Tortoise and Hare story............. Anyway, it's the smallest chiles that start out the strongest (plants..not peppers as I'll explain in a minute). The Habanero seedlings even with their large leaves are the most tender and succeptible to sunscald, when you transplant, thats when the leaves turn white. To avoid this as best as you can transplant at night...good advice for ANYTHING that you transplant and on a a cludy or rainy day if possible to acclimate the seedling. Now that explanation on the peppers vs. plants in size, The smallest pepper we grow is the 'Wild Dynamo' which grows to the size of a pea. However, it grows on a 6' Robust plant. Then, conversely the one Habanero that grows on a low and bushy plant is the Orange Habanero which averages only 2' high...go figure! Check out the difference in size of the Wild Dynamo, vs. the Thai Sun, vs. the Orange Habanero at http://www.pepperjoe.com in the seed catalog. The artist does a fabulous job with her drawings.
