Hello to all Suite 101 Members.
Our readers are real smart people...REAL smart . I've gotten some great
feedback from you all and here is one of the best:
Deer Repellant. I put a 1/2 bar of Dial soap in the stocking part of an
old pair of panty hose and tied it 4' above the ground on a bamboo (any
stake will do, of course) stake that was about 6' high. I put it 4'
because that's where the average deers nose is gonna be. I spaced the
stakes about 10 feet apart throughout the front of the garden.
Last year most of the crops I mentioned a minute earlier had damage due to
a herd of deer that frequents (and still does) my yard. I had to wait for
the second re-growth to come up and lost most of the early summer, cutting
my production way down.
This year? 0 problems. The deer seem to go out of their way to avoid my
garden. A subscriber wrote last year that they detest the smell of Dial
soap and apparently they do.
If you try this let me know how it goes so I can expand my scope beyond
just my experience. Thanks.
I just made an awesome Pesto sauce for pasta this weekend that I wanted to share with you. I usually use Basil but it's not ready yet and I read that Argula or Roquette makes a good substitute. Argula is an early salad that is the 1st one up..usually in 20/25 days it's ready. I bought the traditional Pine Nuts and mixed 50%/50% with walnuts and chopped them up in a pestle (you can use a blender). I sliced up the Argula in a bowl with a sharp scissors cutting it over and over till it was chopped fine. I fried the Nuts and greens (you can substitute any greens..spinach, swiss chard, etc) in olive oil and added chopped garlic and onions. After it was well cooked I added a ton of Romano cheese. and cooked some more. Presto! The Pesto sauce is done. Pour over spaghetti and mix very well. I still like Basil best but the Argula was tasty and hearty. Editors note: A Pestle is an awesome household tool. Chops dried Chiles well, nuts, vitamins and just about anything hard or dried.
