Other good Organic mulches which are free are untreated grass clippings, coffee grinds, eggshells and sawdust (add something acidic, like coffee grounds to balance the alkalinity).

Good evening Pepperjoe:

I recently moved into a house that has a garden plot in the back yard. The plot hasn't been used in at least 3 years and was thick with weeds and overgrowth. I've hacked everything out and tilled the soil, but I keep getting this reoccurring weed problem. I'm not sure what type of weed it is, but it grows low to the ground and spreads out like carpet. It's tenacious and I'm at wits end with it. What can I do to get rid of this weed? I don't want to use a weed killer such as roundup, but I don't want to continually yank weeds all season either. I know the weed very well. If you hoe it with a weeder to knock off the top, a layer of thick mulch will smother the roots. Try newspaper with grass clippings on top. It's free and organic if the grass is untreated and the newspaper is black and white. Don't Panic, Go Organic! Pepper Joe
