Hello to everyone in our 'Hot' community.
I'm getting a lot of mail about hastening ripening now that the bulk of
the season is behind us,
especially in shorter season climates. Also I've received a lot of mail
about how to use the
abundance of Chiles that many of you have...what a wonderful problem. To

Now, for those shorter season areas..or actually anywhere that you would
like to hasten the ripening
process. Here goes: 6 weeks before the 1st expected frost you can prune
the top leaves, flowers
and tiniest peppers off of your plants. I KNOW it hurts and seems strange,
but it works. It causes
the plants strength to go to the remaining Chiles. Also, it triggers an
alarm mechanism in the plants
that they are in a survival mode (much like a plant that splits in half
from disease, a thunderstorm, a
pest attack, etc.) and the plant needs to quickly mature the healthy pods
into seed production for it's
survival. Don't be afraid to experiment. Last year I stripped all of the
bottom leaves off of a Orange
Habanero so the sun and fresh air could get through. I topped off the
buds/flowers and small Habs.
The plant was then 90% Habs (about 50 of them) and they matured VERY
quickly. Actually the
plant looked really neat too.
