Greetings to all Chileheads & Home Gardeners.
How is your garden doing? I'm 'Growing Chickens' in mine!
My 2 year old niece pointed to my garden and said "Uncle Joe is growing
chickens in there". I had to think for a moment and then it hit me. I
have a zillion egg shells in my garden that I've been continually
tossing in over the winter. So to a 2 year old she figured I was
growing chickens.
This is an important time of the year for the garden. It's doing more
than just laying dormant. The constant freezing and thawing in most of
the country helps to break down the soil and make it more pliable. The
rain and snow (not much yet) add nutrients to the soil that are not
instantly depleted.
In the recent surveys that I took (more on that later) several people
requested that we sell organic fertilizer. I'd feel guilty doing that
as there are many options for you to get stuff for free. In addition to
my egg shells I have loads of coffee grounds in the garden along with
various odds-n-ends like citrus rinds, banana peels, shrimp and crab
shells etc. You can load up on this stuff and put it in your garden now
then turn it over in the spring. Where do you get it? How about a
coffee shop like Dunkin Donuts or a breakfast place for the egg shells
and coffee grounds. They just throw it away. They are excellent soil
conditioners and provide valuable nutrients. A seafood store or seafood
restaurant can provide the shellfish fertilizer. There are many other
natural & free options but these are a few of my favorites. In the
spring I'll be burying fish-heads and entrails into marked holes where I
will grow Hot Peppers, Tomatoes, Eggplant and other heavy feeders. Good
Summer free and natural fertilizers are grass clippings (I get these
from untreated lawns) and chopped up leaves kept from the previous
winter. Of course some of you have your own compost piles. There are
many good articles on 'how to' on this topic on the net.
I can go on and on i.e. horse manure from stables etc. but you get the
picture. So why use expensive & questionable chemical fertilizer that
depletes the soil and gives nothing back in return?
