Summers First Chiles: Chile Tidbits

Hello Chileheads and Garden enthusiasts. Well they are finally here! The first Hot Peppers of the season. The earlier varieties are maturing here in the mid-atlantic. We're enjoying Fluorescents, Thai Sun, Purrira, pueblo and Cayennes. Of course there are many varieties that need more time especially the Habanero family. It's ironic how the Habaneros germinate REAL slow, get off to a slow start growing and then WHAM! They take off and become the largest Hot Peppers in the garden. I typically have Habaneros reach a height of 7 feet. You can accomplish this also if you give them the right amounts of fertilizers as they are heavy feeders. Summertime is wonderful time now that those great Chiles are here. We just had a super Barbecue with hamburgers, italian sausage and hot dogs. As a side garnish for the sandwiches I put hot peppers, mushrooms, onion chunks and elephant garlic slices on 12" bamboo skewers. Man, does that make a hamburger sizzle! I'm also dicing up the hot peppers raw (seeds and all) and adding them to cheese steaks, Hoagies and Zeps. What in the world is a zep? I'd bet that 99% of you don't know because we invented it in our restaurant in Norristown, Pennsylvania back in the early 60's and I believe a zep is still indigenous to that town. I'll tell you all about it in a future Newsletter when you're loaded with vine ripened tomatoes because they make this sandwich happen.

Chilehead Humor ===============

"Don't Horse Around" A Chilehead is reading his paper when his wife walks up behind him and smacks him on the back of the head with a frying pan. He asks, "What was that for?" She says, "I found a piece of paper in your pocket with 'Betty Sue' written on it." He says, "Jeez, honey, remember last week when I went to the track? 'Betty Sue' was the name of the horse I went there to bet on." She shrugs and walks away. Three days later he's reading his paper when she walks up behind him and smacks him on the back of the head again with the frying pan. The Chilehead asks, "What was that for?" She answers, "Your horse called."

"Mom's are smart people" John invited his mother over for dinner. His Mother was a fan of of Hot Peppers and was well known as a shrewd woman. During the meal, his mother couldn't help noticing how beautiful John's roommate was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between John and his roommate and this only made her more curious. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between John and the roommate than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts, John volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Julie and I are just roommates."
