Getting Used To It...

I don't think anyone who works in a hospice situation ever really gets used to "it"- meaning losing a patient. We do get used to death as a natural course of life, but losing an individiual causes us much grief.

What I have become accustomed to is the reality and inevitability of death. I have learned to count as sweet, the moments I share with my friends and family. "Tomorrow is not promised..." is a quote that rings truest to one who walks where remaining time is often counted in minutes...

Hospice has taught me to appreciate not only the lives of those dear to me-it has also taught me to apprecite my own life for the gift that it is. I take nothing for granted.

Hospice has taught me that to be afraid of death is nonsense. It has reinforced the teaching to my children- I have never confused them by telling them someone who is DEAD is actually asleep.

Through hospice I have met some truly great people. Whether they touched me for a moment or for a year. I don't fear death. How could I knowing those who have gone on before? Enough of my soap box--let me step down!
