Music In the Room

© Pamela Tyree-Gavin

Along with all of the other services offered to the dying there is a relatively new phenomenon -peaceful music in the sick room. Many times, one can encounter a harpist, flautist or violinist playing soft tones right next to the bed.

While the music may be offered at any time,it is frequently played when the end is near. It's said that the sweet music provides a soothing background for the period of transition.

Classical music is not the only music that one might hear. The patient will likely want to hear the music s/he likes. I am never surprised to hear jazz, rock n' roll and yes, even the blues, eminating from a patient's room. Sometimes music offers the only constant for the person. One woman, I am told, really liked opera. At the last, her family had a baritone come in to sing her favorites.

When preparing for my home visits, I will ask what type of music the person likes. I make sure I bring along a little something to add a high NOTE to the visit.

When my mom was in the CCU, the drs told us she wouldn't make it out alive. We decided to help in anyway we could, try to make the room as pleasant as possible so she could relax and heal.
