Brief Book Review: Dying Well by Ira Byock,M.D.From the perspective of a physician who is President of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, this book offers an interesting and informed view of Hospice and palliative care. The book provides individual chapters focusing on various patients at various stages in their dying. Although every chapter is excellent, one of the most poignant deals with the last days of the author's father. Another reveals the trials of a dying child and his selfless family. Dr. Byock shows us the opportunities we can all find in the face of death-opportunities to grow, to accept and to tie up lose ends. And this works both ways, for patients as well as those who attend them. This is an excellent chance for those unfamiliar with the topic to gain a straightforward understanding of Hospice and to see how we can, should and must relate to many aspects of dying even as we are living. I highly recommend this book.
