Rain + Horses = Adventure

Let me tell you a story. The other day, we went out to ride the horses, even though there were big black clouds in the sky. We figured, we could get in a little ride, before hte rain. Well, after spending an hour tacking them up and another 30 minutes locating essentials that had become "misplaced" we mounted up and rode out of the driveway. Less than a mile down the road, 10 minutes, MAX, the first rain fell. Of course, being not so fond of being wet, all of us turned and hurried back to the house. Once there, we spent ANOTHER hour untacking, walking, grooming and giving cookies. Sound familiar? Yeah, I bet it does. We all managed to get soaked, the horses were snotty because they HATE rain, and not only that, they had to carry US in it! So...since it has rained pretty solid the last week, we haven't even tried to ride. They have been pampered, fed cookies, loved, groomed, sprayed and everything else, but no saddles. Yesterday, we took advantage of a nice, semi-clear day and went out for a ride. Now, mind you, it took almost two hours to tack up because they had been rolling in the mud by the pond...but finally, we were on our way. At the driveway is a mudpuddle, all four horses spooked, just absoultely SURE that the MudPuddle Monster was going to come up and get them! Then, Reena decided that she would really rather not go, thank you very much. So she stopped. I tried to turn her for several minutes while my riding companions watched, amused and hopeful that Reena's bad attitude wouldn't rub off on their horses. Finally, Reena starts the right way, and my mother says, "Marta...where's your crop?". I looked down at my saddle horn where the crop usually resides until needed, and nope, no crop. Look back up the road, yep...sure enough, in the middle of the road is my bright red, brand new crop. Sighing, I decided I would grab it on the way home. Suddenly, Reena plants her feet and prepares to lay down, in the middle of the road to take a nap. Screeching, I managed to convince here that it was NOT Siesta time and she decided to go home again. So this time, I let her go as far as the crop. I dismounted, grabbed the crop and started to get back on, Reena had other ideas. Reena, my sweet, gentle, little mare who rarely leaves a VERY slow walk, decides she want to race home like she's running for roses. Another few minutes to get her turned back around and headed back on the ride and we finally caught up with the others.
