What will we do for love?

Apr 17, 2000 - © Marta Towne

You know, horses are a lot smarter than we give them credit for! We have five horses at the moment, including a beautiful black Arabian mare with a little problem. She is in heat, and the only stud we have is her yearling son. However, the neighbor down the road has a wonderful black Foxtrotter stallion, and our mare, Shanali, has decided that she is in lust.

Now, our horses are commonly referred to as Unicorns....you know, "horney horses". My mare, Reena, when she is in heat, tosses her tail up over her back and looks for all the world like one of our Lhasa Apsos. But never has she decided to take herslef to the stallion of her choice! Shanali, on the other hand, apparently decided that since WE weren't doing what she determined to be the proper thing at the proper time, well, she would take matters into her own hooves!

Apparently, one of the horses would step on the wire gate, holding it low enough that the others could step over it, then the ones on the outside, would return the favor. Then all five of them would take a little trip "over the fields and through the woods" to the stallion down the way. Once at the pasture housing Shanali's chosen mate, they would stand there and try to break him out. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on if you have two legs or four, the stallion was NOT inclined to leave his own herd. Since the neighbor uses electric fenceing, and we never have, our roving Juliets (and one Romeo that was along for the ride) didn't understand why the other horses weren't joining them. So, Shanali, grabbed the top wire in her teeth, intending, I am sure, to assist in the pasture break. Imagine her surprise when the fence bit back! Luckilly, all that happened was a burn on the corner of Shan's mouth and we came down and put EVERYONE back. But did this stop the forces of love?

Nope! Everyday for a week, until we finally found the means of escape, the four would be Ladies of the evening and the little stud would get out and head down to the Stallion. They would simply stand there outside the pasture and wait, calling in lovesick neighs for thier chosen one. Kind of reminded me of a group of teenage girls standing outside a star's hotel hoping for a sight of the one they think they love.
