Reena's Love Life

Jun 27, 1999 - © Marta Towne

Those of you who are regular readers of this space know that I have a gray Arabian mare named SR Anzisinn Abu, Reena for short. She had a bad start in life, being basically starved from birth to almost a year old and subsequently is stunted. She was wild as the proverbial March Hare when I first got her at not quite a year. Now she is very people oriented and loving; almost a lap horse. She is now 3 years old.

Well, due to her being stunted and to an injury to her leg, she is not able to be ridden. She could carry some weight, but not that of an adult. So, because I wanted a riding horse, and I can no longer control my gelding, I decided to breed her.

I spent almost a year planning this. I weighed my choices of stallions very carefully. I want a foal that is well formed, with the small head of Reena, but more muscled. I finally narrowed my choices down to a Paint horse stallion or a 97% Arabian Pinto stallion. The Paint horse stud is named Mr. Diceman, he is a Blue Roan Tobiano with a wonderful personality and a great "go for the gusto" attitude. He is well behaved, gentle and the foals he has on the ground are well made and Paint, including one with a Arabian Mare related to Reena!. The other stallion is named Pandemonium Churinga, he is a good size tri colored stallion, black bay and white. He is a little more spirited than Diceman, very typey Arabian, but A LOT bigger! All of his foals are Painted too.

Now let me explain, I really do not like the look of Paints or Pintos, personal choice, but I just prefer solid horses. BUT, these stallions are wonderful, well proportioned and exceptional in personality and build. So I am willing to "overlook" the Paint color.

Finally I chose Pandemonium Churinga. April 13, 1999, Reena finally cooperated and went into heat. We took her to the farm where the stallion is and arranged to have her bred! Reena was not amused when the stallion mounted her, as a matter of fact, she kicked him and bloodied his front legs! After a little while, he settled down and Reena allowed him to cover her.

Afterwards, she was placed in a pasture with several other mares. She settled in easily and preceded to graze. The next night, I went back to breed her again, but she was not interested! After only one day, she was out of heat. We will see if she took! I am still waiting for a respectable period of time before I have the vet palpate her! Hmm, I wonder if she will forgive me THAT?
