What is the Use of a Horse?

Mar 21, 1999 - © Marta Towne

The equine has been a human's helper for many years. They have assisted us in the creation of the world as we know it. They have been treated as a tool, a partner and a friend. Today, while most horses are not needed as workers anymore, they are still a highly valued assistant to humans. Wether it be as a rodeo bronc, as a cattle horse, or pulling a plow, these creatures have been working at our side since before recorded time.

What is it about a horse that makes them so special? I guess that depends on who you ask. They are hard workers, they do as they are asked, many will put themselves in danger to protect their rider. They are loyal and trustworthy. They give what you ask from them and often more than you ask. They are something to talk to, they don't criticize or talk back. They listen and are a soothing presence in a hectic life.

My mare, Reena, had a bad start in life, but she has since become a very good friend. She has repaid everything I have done for her ten-fold. She is gentle enough to allow children on her back and brave enough to get between me and a horse that was intent on kicking me. She has helped me stay on my feet, she has supported me when I thought I didn't have a friend left in the world. She has been there for me with a soft velvet nose and sweet grainy breath. She is my horse, my at-times transportation, my pet and most of all my friend.

And what does she ask in return? Nothing! She is appreciative of the grain and hay and a place to sleep that is warm and protected. She looks forward to the pets and scratches and attention. But if I gave her none of those, she would still be here. She would still listen and she would still be my friend. The joy I get in her company makes all the work to keep her worth while. And she know it! She is the epitome of the word FRIEND.
