Why do people have horses?

Mar 4, 1999 - © Marta Towne

Why does anybody keep horses? There are as many reasons as there are horse owners (or ownees, depending on how you look at it!). For some people, it is the joy of saddling up and riding for hours anytime they want to. For others, it is the love of the species, of having such a smart and personable creatures as theirs. Still others take great joy in the sight of their own horses grazing in the pasture, and for others it is the joy of have a group of foals every spring. Some people see horses as tools, still others see them as pets. Some of us even see them as members of the families! What ever the reason, those of us with horses derive a great deal of pleasure from having them. They are our pets, our partners, or friends. We can work with them and feel social with out the drawbacks of having another human around.

Let's face it, unlike dogs and cats, horses are not fully dependant on us. They can live quite well with out alot of care from us. But they LIKE us, and they want to be near us. They don't NEED us, but the WANT us. That is perhaps the biggest reason we keep horses, they are our friends, they actually like to be near us. So why do we keep horses? Because they make us feel wanted and they give us a reason to keep on keeping on.
