My Favorite Breed

They say that Quarter Horses as a breed began back around colonial times when people would have horse races for a quarter mile. As I always heard it, people began breeding a horse that was stronger, and faster in the shorter run, sort of in spurts (unlike Thoroughbreds, who are bred for speed in longer distances). So the Quarter Horse was born, a typically muscular, strong, and fast breed.

The Quarter Horses I've known are intelligent animals, with a quiet nature that I love and appreciate. Overall, Quarter Horses are more laid back than most other breeds; of course there are exceptions, as with anything.

Another positive aspect to the breed is that it is extremely versatile. If you visit the American Quarter Horse Association website, http://www.aqha.com, you'll find that they discuss many types of riding and sports, from team roping to horse racing to jumping. Quarter Horse racing is actually a very prominent sport, all over the country but especially in the western United States.

Quarter Horses tend to have an even, calm demeanor, horses that are great for kids to learn around (I know from experience!). Now make no mistake, I love several other breeds to, and of course all horses in general; but Quarter Horses are special to me. I love their dispositions; their strong, beautiful builds (they definitely have their own unique look--you can recognize a Quarter Horse right away); their versatility.
