If you are concerned about a horse and can not find anyone to communicate with about the horse's care, here are some other things to check for in the horse's environment. Free access to plenty of good drinking water is critical. Look to see that the animal has some type of shelter (even a group of trees may suffice) and reasonably secure fencing. There should be no loose wires or broken boards with nails exposed. All pastures can become muddy and nasty looking at times, but the horse should not be confined to an area with large amounts of manure in it. The horse's hooves can be another indication of his care. Neglected horses generally have very long, chipped or ragged looking hooves. You may also want to check around for feed or hay on the property, but be aware of trespassing laws.

Conditions that do not meet these criteria indicate that the horse may need someone to intervene for his care. You may be the only hope that horse or pony has for getting care. Organizations rely on the intercession of concerned individuals to help end the suffering and possibly save the life of a horse in need. Concerned individuals that are properly informed of the situation can help even further by attempting to find a resolution with the horse's owner and by being certain that a neglect situation actually exists before asking for assistance.
