Racing Form Adds Handicapping Features

The Daily Racing Form (http://www.drf2000.com) has added several handicapping features in the printed and online editions that should help we horseplayers. The best include:

Trainer Form -- "Comprehensive statistics for trainers up to six different categories will be listed below each horse in past performances." For example, DRF says, statistics for a horse trying the grass for the first time coming off a 57-day layoff will include the trainer's winning percentage and return-on-investment over the last two years in the first-time turf and 30-to-60 day layoff categories.

I have relied every so often on Bloodstock Research Information Services (http://www.brisnet.com) for such facts at an additional charge.

Tomlinson Ratings -- "Pedigree guru Lee Tomlinson's popular 'Mudders and Turfers' ratings, a respected tool predicting a horse's aptitude on wet tracks and grass courses, will appear exclusively in DRF."

Those ratings, primarily based on how siblings of sires and dam sires perform, are contained in Tomlinson's Comprehensive Pedigree Guide, which also covers distances in four categories from sprints to 10 furlongs or greater. I use the biannual guide, which averages a little over $8 a month, especially for off tracks. And I've cashed in on some pretty fair exactas.

Best Beyers -- New categories will include top Beyer speed figures for the current and previous years as well as the horse's lifetime best over the race's distance and surface.

Other new stats will include lengths behind for the first quarter-mile of routes and expanded past performances to 20 races for all graded stakes.

But the upgrade is going to cost more, at least 50 cents, depending on the edition.
