Going for the Big Bucks

I'm off to Las Vegas next week. Make that we're off to Vegas.

I'm excited and so is my wife, Anita, about spending a week in the gambling mecca of this grand land that we've never been to; that's right, it'll be the first trip out there for this old handicapper.

It won't be all pleasure. I'm competing in The Orleans National Handicapping Challenge that starts Oct. 16.

Tom Grimes of Palm Bay, Fla., a school buddy and friend, will be my partner in the hotel's three-day contest that will pay big bucks for the highest returns on imaginary investments. That means we've got to come up with some longshots.

We're allowed 12 picks each day at eight tracks. The contest is simple, mutual prices translate into points. We'll each pick six daily and I'll probably play Calder Race Course since that's the track I know best right now, plus maybe Keeneland and possibly Belmont.

Last March, Ross Gallo of West Palm Beach scored 10,022 points and flew home with $114,000 of the $331,500 prize money. He averaged $28.60 for seven winners out of 36 selections.

Tom and his brother, Fred, scored 4,900 points and took home $750 for finishing 41st. They also had seven winners, but their average payoff was $14.

Tom and I are sharing a $500 entry. If there are at least 600 entries (limit is three per person), the winner will get $105,000. Prize money has been extended to 70th place -- $600.

I'll let you know how we do. Wish us luck -- we'll need some.
