The Ant Man is the hottest jockey going. But he isn't all horse racing.
Chris Antley, who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness aboard Charismatic, has a second love: the stock market. Recently I received an e-mail: "I read an article on Chris Antley (that) he has a newsletter on the Internet 'The Ant Man Report.' I can't find it. Any help would be appreciated." The woman can't find it because the 4-month-old newsletter isn't on the Internet yet. Chris e-mails it upon request -- he can be contacted at: antantant@mindspring.com or antley@msn.com; he plans to have a Web page (www.antreport.com) up early in the summer for his 1,000 readers. "One time Bill Shoemaker was at Delaware Park when I was 16 years old (galloping horses) and I wanted to get his autograph," he recalled while answering messages posted at Vinery.net (http://vinery.com), a nifty Internet site about horse racing and breeding. "One of the valets had a shirt that said 'The Shoe' and I wrote 'The Ant' and always wondered what if people started calling me that. "Then in New York, somehow that is what started to happen. Then when I moved to California, The Ant became 'Ant Man.' " During four Wednesday evenings in May, Antley, who was born 33 years ago in Fort Lauderdale, responded to scores of e-mail at Vinery.net on a variety of subjects from thoroughbreds to the stock market. "What do you think of the various race track related stocks right now?" His reply: "I think race tracks are a good value. I actually bought Hollywood Park at 9 7/8 a while back before the news was released about Churchill Downs was in buyout talks. In addition, their earnings were up. I sold out at 14, but for a long-term investment, it is a good buy." The stock (HPK) hit 16 1/16 on Monday. "If you had a chance to pick one horse, or several from the past 10 years, that you didn't get a chance to ride, who might it be? Cigar? Skip Away? Holy Bull?" "Holy Bull," said Antley. "I always thought Holy Bull was a really neat horse, and an attractive horse. I thought he was a champion and he was one horse I would have liked to have ridden." Go To Page: 1
