Giacomo Tries to Win Some Respect, Preakness

Another horse to keep in mind is Greeley's Galaxy, who didn't race as a 2-year-old. He had the most troubled trip at Churchill Downs.

The son of Mr. Greeley broke a bit tardy, chased the fast pace early close to 15 lengths behind after six furlongs before rocketing very wide on the turn to get within 3 ½ lengths of High Fly at the mile marker. When he ran out of gas down the stretch, Kent Desormeaux eased up on him to save the colt for another day.

That day could be Saturday. In his final prep, he won the Illinois Derby at Hawthorne by 9 ½ lengths ridden out in a fast time for the 1 1/8 miles.

Five newcomers to the Triple Crown trail will try to become only the second horse since '84 to win the Preakness after skipping the Derby. Red Cloud did it in '00. Until then, the last horse to perform the feat was Deputed Testimony in '83.

Scrappy T., who ran a very fast 1:35 3/5 winning the Withers Stakes on a good Aqueduct surface, appears to have the best chance to hit the board.

Giacomo won't give up without a fight. While his sire, Holy Bull, was carried out the widest on the first turn of the '94 Derby and finished up the sloppy track, he became Horse of the Year and the champion 3-year-old.

After sitting out the Preakness and Belmont, Mike Smith guided Holy Bull to Grade 1 victories in the Met Mile, Woodward, Dwyer and Travers, whipping the horses that earlier won the Triple Crown races.

Smith will be aboard Giacomo on Saturday.
