BRIDLING:THIS WON'T HURT A BIT!

Does your horse prefer teeth extraction to taking the bit in his mouth? Follow these easy steps to a pain free bridling:

1. Examine your bridle. Is your high port curb wearing thin or the metal flaking? Is the leather on your headstall cracked? Run the pad of your thumb over every inch of leather and metal, feeling for rough spots that could cause pain.

2. Show the Bridle to your horse and watch his reaction. When Trigger sees the communication tool does he flatten his ears, wrinkle his nose, or toss his head? Your equine buddy is probably having a flashback of banged teeth or pulled ears.

3. Go back to basics: Does your horse lower his head when your rest your hand on his poll? Does he willingly open his mouth when you peel back the top lip and rub his gums? Once the basics are conquered it's time to show your horse that the bridle is his friend not a snake with metal fangs.

4. Stand on the left-hand side of your horse. Hold the crown in your right hand and the bit in your left thumb and forefinger. Don't hold the bit by the end of the shanks as this can cause jamming. Position your right arm over the horse's head. With your left hand take a firm hold of the bit level with horse's muzzle, using your left forefinger gently rub the space between the incisors and back teeth and ask for a verbal open. Guide the bit past the incisors. Using your right hand, slide the crown up the forehead putting the bit in its proper place. Carefully slide the crown over the right then the left ear. Adjust the brow band and throatlatch. You're all set to ride without hurting your horse one bit.
