Like a winter's storm that blows through a cloudless day, the rush of the holiday season is upon us. Instead of getting caught up in the panic of present shopping, why not stay home, relax, and give a gift from the heart. Your horse loving friends will appreciate the thoughtfulness of the gift and you can stay within your Christmas budget.

Gifts under $25:

COUPON BOOKS either handmade or on the computer make excellent gifts for the time deprived horse owner.

Examples: Coupon good for one saddle cleaning, horse bath, hauling to the local horse show, blanket washing, tack room painting, corral repair, grooming, etc. Be creative. For horse owners who are lucky enough to keep their horses at home, a coupon for a weekend of feeding, watering, and cleaning corrals would be excellent! Even if the recipient isn't planning to get away for the weekend-just being able to sleep in and not worrying about feeding the horses is a wonderful worry free gift.

HORSE SCRAPBOOK: You can become as creative as you like. From fabric scrap books to store-bought albums. The important item is horse pictures of your friend and their equine buddies. Don't have any photos? In list the help of friends and family of the gift receiver to provide photos (for precious originals you can get them duplicated at a printing or office supply store). Remember these do not need to be recent-in fact photos from childhood and horses to present day will evoke a firestorm of memories the gift receiver will thank you for.

TAIL BAG: Can you sew, hand, or machine? It's easy to make a tube style tail bag with four six by one-inch ties. Or use the technique of the old drawstring purses. Make sure the tail bag is longer enough for the horse or pony's tail. Use wild fabric or quilt together one from scraps around the house. Or sew the tail bag in your friend's favorite color allowing enough fabric to create a scrunchie and headband for the owner.

PICTURE FRAMES AND OTHER STUFF FROM YOUR TACKROOM: Create conversational frame pieces by utilizing unused or old tack. Example: Leather makes all kinds of interesting shaped frames, from hearts to oval. Use hot glue, wood or heavy cardboard backing, and you imagination. Old snaffle or D-ring bits also make interesting frames.

Haven't thrown out that old curb bit? Polish it up and give it away as a towel holder (complete with hand towel in case your friend is not as creative as you). Snaffle bits make great toilet paper holders for the ole' barn bathroom.
