Where can you find a knowledgeable instructor with a positive personality? Local horse clubs, boarding stables, horseman directories, yellow pages, feed stores, friends and family. You can also check with The American Riding Instructors Association online at http://www.win.net/aria/.

Once you've found a possible instructor talk with him/her in person, ask for references, ask if you can observe a lesson. Do they have lesson horses? Will they instruct you on your horse? Do they have first aid training? CPR certified? Regardless of the number of students they have, do they act like a professional? What do they charge for a private lesson? Group lesson?

Charlotte from American Riding Instructors Association stated there is no standard pricing for their instructors, due to the geographic area, competition, and economy of the area. I found this to be true too, but to give you a range taken from the elite stable instructors to small ranches, private lesson average ranged from $20 to $60. Group lessons up to eight students average from $10 to $35 each rider.

Regardless of your age it's never too late to hone your horsemanship skills by training with the right instructor.
