To Board or Not to Board - Money Isn't the Only QuestionRemember, price is only part of the equation in horse boarding. Ask for references. Visit the place at different times of the day to get a feel for the people that own the stables and the various personalities that board there. Unfortunately, cliques and crooks are a small part of the horseworld. No matter how pristine the stable is, if it doesn't feel right keep looking. Bigger isn't always better. You and Old Trigger may enjoy a smaller facility. Ask about their fire/disaster escape plan. Ask about their liability insurance. Is there a trainer or instructor on staff? Don't rely on a verbal agreement. Get everything in writing. The question to-board or not-to-board is not only a matter of money, it's a question of the health, safety and happiness of Old Trigger.
