The Thrice-Tenth Kingdom: UndeadAs undead, Cold Shades are immune to mind-influencing effects, poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, and disease. They do not perceive illusions. They are not subject to critical hits, subdual damage, ability damage, energy drain, or death from massive damage. As incorporeal beings, they may be harmed only by other incorporeal beings, magical weapons, and silver or blessed weapons. They make no noise, except for a low keening from their cold breath (when using that attack only). Cold Shades take special damage from extremes of temperature. Any cold-based or heat-based attack (including flame-based attacks only if they include heat) which does more than 5 hit points of damage does full damage to the Cold Shade; attacks of less than 5 hit points do half damage. They have no saving throw. However, if a cold-based attack follows a heat-based one, or vice versa, the damages cancel each other out. Essentially, cold-based attacks bring the Shades closer to this realm, while heat-based attacks “warm them up” enough that they may pass on to the next. Clerics or other characters with the appropriate knowledge may be aware of Cold Shades’ vulnerability to extreme temperatures.
