Fong Sai Yuk II (1993)It is too bad having to point out the movie's weaknesses, because it is a good movie that any fan should at least rent. There is a massive sword fight at the end of the movie that is absolutely awesome. Jet Li has around ten swords at his sides, which looks fantastic, then he dares tens of corrupted society members to fight him, even while blindfolded. Some of the members are naïve enough to accept the challenge, but he promptly dispatches them. The armed combat is fantastic and compares favorably with even the best fight sequences in Hong Kong cinema. The movie clearly had a lot of potential, but the overall quality of the fight sequences, the plot, and the characters cannot compare to the first movie. There are several scenes using slow motion techniques, but never during the fighting, which is very effective. The slow motion is usually used when Fong Sai Yuk is walking towards inevitable combat, which is the most effective way to use it and really looks neat. There are many things that work well in Fong Sai Yuk II, but the movie is one of Jet Li's weaker productions, unfortunately. Once Upon A Time in China (1991) and its sequel surpass Fong Sai Yuk II in every way, as does The Tai-Chi Master (1993) and Fist of Legend (1994). Nevertheless, Fong Sai Yuk II is unquestionably worth seeing.
