Fong Sai Yuk II (1993)

Fong Sai Yuk II again stars Jet Li as the character of the same name. In the second installment the Red Flower Society is suffering from corruption within its ranks. Although Fong Sai Yuk wants to be the chief of the order, an adversary within the society attempts to thwart him. After an assassin tries to murder the current chief, the society learns that a young boy let her in, not knowing she had violent intentions. One of the member's accused of associating himself with the assassin tries to kill the young boy, but Fong Sai Yuk comes to his rescue. The clan leader does not regard his actions as heroic, but feels that he should not have interfered, instead letting the boy die if necessary.

After the clan leader instructs one of the members to recite all of the Ten Commandments of the clan to Fong Sai Yuk, he then tells the young warrior that he should leave the clan, since he cannot obey its rules. He is extremely frustrated because he did nothing wrong, but he stays with the clan. He soon sets out on a mission to recover an important box containing a guarded secret. He fails to recover it on the first mission and his fellow members do not return. He then sets out alone on another quest to obtain the box for the society. After failing that mission too, the chief injures him and supposedly takes away his martial arts ability, which Fong Sai Yuk said he would forfeit if he failed. The chief gives his position to an adversary of Fong Sai Yuk, which further degrades the society. Despite the injury, however, the young hero's abilities are intact and he returns for revenge against the twisted new leader.

Fong Sai Yuk II is somewhat disappointing, not because it is an inferior movie, but because its predecessor is a masterpiece. The second installment is still a good, enjoyable Hong Kong action movie, although it drags in many scenes and some of the fight scenes are not well done. It is an inconsistent movie. There is a fight sequence towards the beginning where Jet Li fights with a flaming torch and it looks fantastic. It is at least something new that is not typical of most genre movies. Conversely, other fight scenes are pointless and hardly enjoyable.

The music is also disappointing. While the first movie had arguably one of the best scores in any Hong Kong action movie, the sequel boasts an above average score, but not a great one. The plot is sometimes somewhat confusing and it even pokes fun at itself, which is really inappropriate. For instance, one line makes reference to the cliché that all villains must be stupid and implies that Fong Sai Yuk II follows that pattern. Unfortunately, that is true, the villain has no common sense and is not an interesting character in the slightest.
