While guarding the temple, Chan realizes that there really are ghosts present and after some time he discovers a powerful book, once thought lost forever. The ghosts help him master the skills in the book, which is called The Five Style Fists. It is the only style that can defeat The Seven Fists martial art form. Before his training by the five mysterious ghosts, Chan only had a basic knowledge of Kung Fu. Nevertheless, after he enlists the help of the ghosts he becomes a master martial artist and sets off to restore glory to the clan and catch the traitor that stole The Seven Fists.
Many of the scenes involving the ghosts are long and drawn out, which is unfortunate because the music is appropriate and the effects are fairly impressive for a movie made in the late 1970's. Nevertheless, the ghosts continue to stir trouble in the temple for far too long before Chan finally starts to communicate with them. Once he begins to learn the new martial arts style, the movie quickly picks up pace.
The five ghosts are called Crane, Snake, Tiger, Leopard, and Dragon for their individual fighting styles, which combine to form The Five Style Fists martial art technique. After training with the ghosts for some time, he informs his master that he wants to leave the temple and catch the traitor that stole the sacred book. His master agrees that he has the right motivations, but he wonders about his Kung Fu skills, so he forces him to pass a test, which is a custom of the temple.
Chan's fight with fellow temple monks is absolutely awesome. It begins with him using a long wooden pole and fighting a single opponent, but it quickly becomes much more difficult. He must face every monk simultaneously, but he gets to choose his own weapon. He chooses two metal batons that allow him to fend off multiple opponents from all sides. Although the weapons are primarily defensive, the fight is extremely fast-paced and impressive. It is also long enough to allow fans to fully enjoy the action. There are few movies with a fight sequence involving weapons that is as impressive as the one in Spiritual Kung Fu .
