This month, I am very happy. I finally have the opportunity to share a small tidbit of knowledge that I learned over twenty years ago. First, I will share how to replace window glass safely and easily. Then, I will link you to the answer to the question that has puzzled humanity for ages...Why can you see through glass?
Safety glasses Pair of heavy gloves Putty Knife Hammer Glazier's points Glass Glazing putty Linseed oil and paint brush The first thing you want to do when replacing a pane of glass is to safely remove the broken glass from the window frame. Put on your safety glasses and heavy gloves to remove the shards of glass. Go slow and watch for shards of glass that might fall out as you remove others. Some shards will easy to remove while others may require some gentle force. I cannot stress enough the need to be careful. Broken glass is very sharp and can deliver a nasty cut. When you have all the shards removed from the frame, it's time to remove the old glazing putty and glazier's points. Glazier's points are small pieces of metal that help hold the glass in the window. Use the putty knife and hammer to chip out the old putty. Once the putty has been removed, brush the bare wood with linseed oil. This keeps the wood from pulling the oil from the glazing putty before it has a chance to cure. The next step is to apply a thin layer of putty along the edge of the frame that the glass sits up against. This will help seal the window to air and water leaks. Carefully set the glass into the frame. Don't be afraid to seek help with a larger pane of glass. Again, safety first. Using the putty knife, set the glazier's points up against the glass and press them into the wood of the frame. Set the points one about every four to six inches. Finally, take some putty and roll it between your hands and press it onto the edge of the glass and frame. Use the putty knife to smooth out the putty. Give the putty about a week or so to dry and then paint it. And that's all there is to replacing a window pane. Now for the answer to this month's question.
