Quick Companions In The Garden

© Debra Eversole

Ah, tis the gardening season once again! Even though most of us have our gardens already planned by now, some even having theirs planted, you can still think of adding a few more things. For instance, quick growing herbs. A lot of the herbs and vegetables that marry well in the kitchen also do so in the garden. And, if you time things right, both should be ready to harvest at about the same time.

If you like sweet basil, you can scruff up the soil around or in between your tomato plants. Drop in a few seeds right after the tomato plants have formed some small green globes. The sweet basil will be ready to harvest right about the time your tomatoes are ready to pick.

If you're growing cucumbers and plan to make pickles, dill grows well with them. Plant the seeds around the hills after the cucumber plants have begun vining out. By the time the cucumber plants begin producing, the dill should have headed out.

And, since cilantro grows well in between pepper plants, planting a few seeds around them when the peppers have started to fruit works well.

Another thing about doing this companion planting is that seeds are usually reduced by the time you'll want to plant them. Now, before you go in search of the herb seeds, check your garden and seed supply. If you'll be wanting to plant more radishes, for example, now is a good time to buy the seeds if you don't have any left.
