And what on earth do I mean by "real seeds"? Open pollinated and heirloom seeds; those in which you may obtain seeds from the plants for your next garden; those that are not are not hybrids (as a great deal of the seeds in our stores are).
Most of the homesteading folks I know are feeling sticker shock right now as they are ordering seeds for their gardens from catalogs and the like. There is a way around this yearly event -- buying and saving your own seeds. And it's not as difficult or time-consuming as some may think. While there's not enough room in this article to get into this to any degree, I have searched the web for some interesting sites in order to help you with this. They're at the bottom of this article. As a beginning seed saver many, many years ago, I started off with things like chives, dill and potatoes. Buying the proper seed in order to save seeds is the key here. If you expect hybrid varieties to produce the same crop as you harvested from, you're setting yourself up for a big disappointment. Even if you are able to grow something from the them, it will not be anywhere near the original crop because those seeds are not stable. They can't be. It's been bred out of them. Some hybrid vegetables also produce a sterile seed. However, there are other options. Plenty of them! The rather eclectic selection of sites that follow offer a great deal of information that you may not be able to find elsewhere. Highly useful and worth taking a peek at! ManyTracks - Gardening @ http://www.manytracks.com/garden.htm offers wonderful gardening advice, especially for northern climates; Seeds for Survival @ http://www.seedsforsurvival.com/ offer heirloom and open pollinated seeds and information while The Garden - Seed Exchange - Herbs - Horticulture - Pioneer Thinking @ http://www.pioneerthinking.com/garden.ht... gets into the old ways of saving seeds and Seed Savers Exchange @ http://nj5.injersey.com/~jceres/garden/s... is a very good site for finding old seed varieties. Spring is nearly here! Happy gardening! Go To Page: 1
