Homestead Gifts for Critters

Go ahead and laugh at the following. That's okay, you have my permission! However, you'd be surprised at how many homesteaders I've met who spoil their livestock, especially at this time of the year. So, with that in mind, here are a few treat "recipes" for critters.

Horse and Cattle Pucks: Combine 4 cups sweet feed with 1 cup shredded apples and 1 cup shredded carrots. Mix well. Melt one cup of grated suet over low heat and dribble it over the sweet feed mixture, stirring well as you go. Press the mixture into regular muffin tins, filling them to the top of each cup. Refrigerate until solid, about 3 hours. Pop them out when they've hardened and freeze any excess in airtight bags until needed.

Goat Droppings: Leftover oatmeal is the key to this tasty treat. Take 2 cups of cooked oatmeal and add 1/2 cup diced dried fruit (any kind), 1/2 cup diced carrots and 1/2 cup sweet feed. Mix well. Drop by the tablespoon onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 300 degrees F. for about an our or until edges are hard. Store in a plastic container in the refrigerator for up to a week; freeze excess in airtight bags until needed. Note: some sheep like these, too.

Jumping Chicken Salad: Shred any/all of the fresh, not so perfect vegetables and fruits you have on hand. Your root cellar should have some offerings by now. After you've mixed the above together, transfer it to an onion or other such mesh bag. Tie the top shut with baling twine, leaving a length to hang the bag in the chicken coop. Make sure to tie it up high enough to where the chickens need to jump to get at it but not so high that they can't reach it.
