There are many ways in which to make money for your homestead other than the obvious: an outside job; growing crops; growing livestock. However, finding other ways in which to produce income can be somewhat frustrating, especially if you find yourself in need of money.
A great way to jump-start your future earning capabilities is to make a list of your skills along with what equipment and/or materials you have access to. Start with the obvious (carpentry, plumbing, wiring, etc.) and then work your way down to your own special qualifications. Here's a list of some of the ways in which I either made money or have considered doing so in order to add to my homestead income: Drying Flora for Local Florists: Whether it's a weed or a cultivated flower, your local florist buys dried materials from various sources throughout the year. Take a look around their shop to see if you can provide them with the items they use. Crafts: While this is rather obvious, many people overlook it. Browse through a nearby gift shop and see if there is a way you can make something that would go with any line they offer. Havest Wild Mushrooms for Local Restaurants: First and foremost, know your mushrooms! Then, visit an eating establishment where mushrooms are featured and talk to either the manager or head chef. Critter Care: From pet/livestock sitting to grooming, if you have the experience, your services will be welcomed by more folks than you may realize. Calligraphy/Good Handwriting: Addressing invitations (wedding, graduation, anniversary, etc.) is an easily overlooked market, one that people will gladly hire someone for - if only they knew that someone! Shorthand Skills? Local newspapers are often in need of someone to take notes and to transcribe them for public meetings. Photography: A decent 35 mm camera, steady hand, keen eye and timing can provide a surprising amount of income from even the smallest of towns, no darkroom needed. For instance, a gorgeous sunrise which includes a local focal point can be sold to your area's newspaper, Chamber of Commerce - or even to your nearest Real Estate office. Have A Computer? If you do, the possibilities are nearly endless for you! For instance:
***Accounting Software: You can keep financial records for area farmers, small businesses, etc. What about your neighbor, who's mentioned how terrible they are at balancing their checkbook?
***Word Processing Software: From resumes to small business address lists, it's all right there at your fingertips!
