Two decades or so ago while attending the weekly livestock auction, my neighbor joked over my wandering critters. I instantly noticed the older man behind my neighbor. He was squirming, averting eye contact, with his mouth tightly pursed. Suddenly, he looked directly at me, and uttered "I can solve your problem, missy." He had my full attention.
"All ya gotta do is to sing or whistle the same tune at ev'ry feedin.' That way, them animals know the song means food." As he stood up, he continued "When them animals git out, take yur feedin' bucket and make that there tune. They'll come a runnin', you'll see." With that said, he left. That very evening, I whistled 'Dixie' while feeding the steers, horses, goats, pigs, sheep and chickens. A full week passed when, on a day of constant rain, the steers decided to push their way through the pasture's fence. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I grabbed their feed pails and added a scoop of their favorite feed to each. I then headed straight to the corn fields where I knew they were hiding out, whistling "Dixie." Yep, you got it - stampede! What amazed me is that they went right to the gate of their pasture, waiting to be let back in. The only livestock this method didn't seem to work for were the chickens. But that was okay because they'd come running when they'd see me anyway.
