Floating egg

You will need:
an egg,
a large glass of water,
15 tablespoons of salt.

Put the egg in the glass of water.
The egg sinks.
Take the egg out of the glass.
Now add the salt to the water and stir.
Carefully put the egg back into the water and it will float.

The egg is more dense than water so it sinks. But brine (salt water) is more dense than the egg so an egg floats in brine.

Dancing Raisins
You will need:
Raisins,
a glass or jar,
clear soda like Sprite or 7-up.

Pour soda into the glass

Drop in the raisins. They will sink. Sit back and watch. The raisins will float to the top, then sink, then float to the top and so on.....It may take a few minutes for the raisins to get going.

The raisins are more dense than the soda so they sink. The carbon dioxide bubbles are less dense than the liquid in the soda, so they float. When the raisins sit on the bottom of the glass, carbon dioxide bubble stick to the folds of the raisins. Eventually there are enough bubbles on the raisin to lift it up to the top of the soda. At the top of the soda the bubbles pop and then the raisins fall to the bottom again. Now the whole process starts over again.

Are You Eating Iron?

This is a neat way for kids to see what they are eating. Materials Needed:
Total brand Cereal
Cereal Bowl

Ziploc Baggie
Water
A Good Magnet

Place about 1/2 cup of cereal into the baggie.
Seal the baggie and crunch up the cereal by squeezing it.
Put the crunched cereal into the bowl and add about 1 cup of water.
Stir the cereal with the magnet. Be patient, it takes a minute or so.
Carefully take the magnet out of the cereal and examine it.

Do you see the iron sticking to the magnet?

Why?

The iron in your cereal is just that....iron, and iron is attracted by a magnet.

Capture a Spider Web

Capturing a spider's web is a great activity to go along with a spider or insect study. It is also a neat science activity that takes just minutes.

There are two ways of capturing a spider web, and both work well. Below are explanations of both.

Materials Needed:
Black construction paper or poster board.

Spray paint OR Spray adhesive.
Scissors

Contact paper - optional
Polyurethane spray- optional
Baby Powder
Spider Web - hopefully one you found outside....not inside :-)

Instructions 1-
