5 Minute Science Experiments

Try these quick and easy experiments for Science.

Molecule buddies

You will need: a glass full of water and a bunch of coins.

Fill the glass all the way to the top with water.
Let the kids guess how many coins it will take to overflow the glass.
Carefully and slowly drop the coins, one at a time, into the glass (you may want to count the coins as they go into the water).
Watch closely and the water will actually rise above the rim of the glass.
This is called surface tension.
It takes a lot more coins than you would think to make the glass overflow.
That’s because the water molecules really like to stick together. They actually pull themselves together.

Wet Head

You will need:
a glass half full of water
a thin cloth napkin or handkerchief
a rubber band.

First chose one of your kids as the victim. Sit them in a chair.
Place the napkin over the mouth of the glass and wrap the rubber band around the napkin, securing it to the glass.
Slowly turn the glass over and hold it above your child's head.
The pull of the water molecules will hold the water in the glass.
Now, if you want....while the glass is still upside down and over your child's head, touch the napkin with your fingers.....
Then hand your child a towel and let them dry them self off. Use that same towel to clean up the mess in the kitchen. When you touched the napkin you broke the surface tension and the pull of the molecules.....That's why you should never touch the tent when camping in the rain.

Running powder

You will need: a very clean plate, water, powder and soap

Fill the plate with water and sprinkle powder on top of the water.
Touch the middle of the powder on the surface of the water with the edge of the bar of soap.
Watch the powder rush to the edge of the plate.
This happens because the soap breaks the hold of the water molecules in the center, but the water molecules still have a lot of pull toward the edge of the plate where the soap did not touch...so the molecules on the outer edge of the plate pull the powder as they pull the other water molecules toward the edge.

Match boat

You will need: a stick match, a tiny piece of soap, a sink full of water.

Have an adult slit the end of the match with a knife.
Place the tiny piece of soap in the slit.
