Edible Birds Nests, Quill Pens and Easy Bird FeedersBirdie BreakfastA perfect addition to a bird unit study. This is much less messy than the pine cone feeder and easier for the kids to do. Many younger children do not like to get their fingers messy and therefore, do not enjoy making the pine cone type feeder. In this simple craft that everyone can feel free to participate and enjoy. Materials Needed:
Poke a hole in the piece of stale bread. Slip a piece of string through the holes in the bread and the holes in the bagels. Tie ends together to make a knot. Spread peanut butter on the bread and bagels. Sprinkle the peanut butter with Bird Seed. If you are making this in a group and kids are taking them home, the bagel can be placed seed side togther and popped into a baggie for easy transport. String Cheerios and tie loose ends. Both the cheerio chains and bagel feeders are now ready to hang.
Make a Quill Pen
Materials Needed:
Find or buy a feather (duck feathers work well). Edible Birds Nests
A yummy way to work on your study of birds! This is a quick and easy recipe that kids will love.
Materials Needed: Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave. Place a handful of chow mien noodles on a plate. One for plate of noodles for each child, would be nice. Place a blob of melted chocolate onto each handful of noodles. Mix well, coating all the noodles with chocolate. Make sure the chocolate is not so hot that someone will get burnt. Have the kids form their chocolate/noodle blob into a nest. Place another little blob of chocolate into the nest and place the jelly beans on the blob. Place your nest onto wax paper and allow to dry.
Variations: Use shredded coconut instead of chow mien. Use butterscotch chips instead of chocolate. Add marshmallow peeps or chocolate eggs. Add red and green sprinkles for a holiday look.
