Make a Frog House and More on Fruits and SeedsMake a Frog House and More on Fruits and SeedsLet‘s learn about the needs of a garden and how we can help our plants to grow. Frogs and toads are garden friends. These creatures eat insects and caterpillars, which are not wanted in our garden. Read on to learn how to make a frog house to encourage frogs to move in and get to work on those insects!
You will need: Cut a half circle out of one of the cottage cheese containers. When the container is placed upside down an arch will be cut out acting as a doorway. Paint the container with craft paints. Paint on flowers, trees or glue on sequins or plastic jewels. Allow to dry. Place the house in your garden. You might want to place a rock on the top of the house to keep it from blowing away. Now dig a hole in the garden near the frog house. Place the second container in that hole. Fill the container with water. This will be your frogs pond. You may want to change the water regularly so that mosquitoes will not reproduce in your pond. When the veggies are ready to be picked they will be very easy to pluck from the plant. If you have to work to get them off the plant, it’s not time to pick them. The exception to this would be any veggie in the squash family, including pumpkins. These usually need to be cut from the vine. Your goal as a vegetable gardener is to acquire vegetables, but that is not the plants goal. The plants goal is to produce seeds. If you pick the “fruit” then the seeds will not end up on the ground and the plant can not reproduce. This causes the plant to produce more “fruit” at another attempt to reproduce. For some plants, such as beans, peas, cucumbers and broccoli, the more you pick, the more fruit they will produce. Test plant production. Plant two cucumber plants. Pick every cucumber that is produced on the first plant when it reaches about six inches in length. On the second plant only pick the cucumbers when they get very large, or don’t pick them at all. Keep a chart and record each cucumber picked or produced. After a month or so decide which plant produced more vegetables.
