Flowers, Seeds and Fruit

Sprouting is when a plant begins to grow. In the beginning the seed absorbs water and swells. The hard shell will soften and the roots will emerge. The roots will burrow into the soil. The seed leaves that were present in the seed will push their way out of the seed and pop up above the soil. The plant will become larger and the first set of true leaves will form. The seed leaves will then fall off.
Experiment:

Soak a lima bean for several hours. With adult help, split the seed in half and examine the seed coat, seed leaves and stem.
