Egg in a Bottle and Distilled Water Experiments© Lisa Hawkins
Feb 16, 2001
I thought we could take a break from our in-depth magnetism study to do some quick and
easy experiments! Egg In a BottleThis is a great science experiment that
you can do with the kids.
Materials Needed:
An apple juice bottle or cider bottle
Newspaper
Matches
A hard boiled egg
Sauce Pot
Instructions:
Wash and dry the juice bottle.-
Peel the egg.
-
Cut or tear the newspaper into strips.
-
Place the strips into the juice bottle.
-
Light the strips on fire. Adult supervision required.
-
When the paper starts to burn, place the egg over the opening of the bottle.
-
Wait.....keep waiting....
-
The egg will be pressed inside the bottle with a loud pop!
The pressure in the bottle was reduced when the fire used up the oxygen inside. The force of the
air pressure
outside of the bottle, pushed the egg inside.
Enjoy!
Making Distilled Water
Materials:
1 Large bowl
1 Small bowl
12x12 piece of plastic wrap
Tape
A coin
Food coloring
Salt
Water
1. Boil 3 cups of water. Add 3 tablespoons of salt and stir until dissolved. 2. Add a few drops of food coloring and stir. 3. Carefully pour the water into your large bowl. 4. Place the small bowl inside the large bowl (right on top of the water). 5. If the small bowl tips or floats, try:
Using a heavier small bowl Or remove some of the colored water. Be careful, the water
should still be very hot! 6. Cover the large bowl with plastic wrap and tape to secure. The plastic wrap should not be
tight, nor should it be too loose. It should just be flat. 7. Place your coin in the middle of the plastic wrap. 8. Put the whole works out in the sun, preferably on a hot, hot day. 9. Check the small bowl in a few hours. There should be water in it. What color is the water?
Taste the water. Does it taste salty? What happened?
The sun heated the colored water and evaporation began. The moist, hot air rose to the plastic
wrap. There the water condensed on the plastic and rolled to the center of the plastic ceiling. The
water then dripped into the small bowl. Only water evaporates, leaving behind the salt and color.
This is distilled water. This water is safe to drink because we boiled it. I don't recommend drinking stream, river or creek
water. Hope you enjoy this project!
