More Winter Science Fun


to the local nature center and learn about bird "fly ways". Are there any birds that visit your area just in the winter?
  • Make a mosaic picture in the snow, with birdseed. Do the same birds that visit the mosaic, visit the feeders? Some birds are ground feeders, some are not.
  • Make a list of animals that hibernate. Learn about hibernation.
  • Find out what friction has to do with ice skating, and melting ice.
  • List the animals at the zoo that will enjoy the chilly temperatures.
  • Learn what the freezing temperature is in Celsius.
  • Talk about why wearing a hat in cold temperatures is so important. Most of your body heat is lost through your head and neck, so wearing a scarf is equally important.
  • Discover if more or less weight on the sled makes a speed difference.
  • Make a list of animals whose coats change color in the winter.
  • Learn why humans shiver.
  • Examine snow tires. Why are they more effective in the snow than regular tires?
  • The stars are in full glory during the winter. Take a walk outdoors, at night, and learn the major winter constellations.
  • Check the newspaper, or local college, for any meteor showers that might be coming up. Get the hot cocoa ready and enjoy.
